The Gamecock football season is in the delicate balance of being lost for the year as quarterback troubles plague the Columbia University. Stephen garcia has thrown nine interceptions this year,so far, and head coach Steve spurrier has had enough. Today versus Kentucky, Spurrier has given Connor shaw the starting nod. While noone is blaming Head Coach Spurrier about his move, The whole debacle is raising questions among Gamecock fans.
The University of South Carolina has rasised Tuition prices almost yearly. Currently one semester is touching close to $13,000. Also the campus has raised sports and athletic prices. Gamecock football tickets are around $50 per game, and higher depending on the opponent. Could you afford to take a family of 4 to a game today? do you have $200 to toss away? These examples raise the question if the University has gone too far too fast. Steve Spurrier is making millions, new facilities being built everyday, but what exactly does the fan get? I would harken back to the Joe Morrison days or even Jim Carlen days when Carolina played hard nosed football without the Million dollar flash, and they actually played better.
So what is a Gamecock fan to do? pay the prices they set? and still see subpar football on the field? it is everyones choice. I for one choose not to let a single potential mediocre football game run my entire weekend and Saturday. I'll pull for the Gamecocks, but whether i will set aside time to watch a struggling million dollar team lose to a lowly Kentucky i doubt it. The key point is Gamecock fans have gotten little in the upgrade. Sure we went to the sec championship last year, and promptly got dispatched in an embarrasing loss.
People around the world are starting to question the status Quo. There are protestors in each city protesting large banks and Wall Street. While some are satisfied being a losing Gamecock fan year in and year out, others are actually contemplating what a fan means. After lengthy contemplations i have concluded that giving or supporting a University that i will never be able to afford to send my children to is pointless. If the University began lowering admissions costs, tuition fees and ticket prices, then maybe, until then it is like throwing money down the drain, and money today isn't free. Could #OccupyGamecocks be that far away?
